What Is Gingivitis?

Could you have a common form of gum disease called gingivitis? You might if your gums bleed easily. Luckily, your Saluda, SC, dentist, Dr. Sam Wheeler of Saluda Smilemakers can offer treatments to improve the health of your gums.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis occurs when plaque, a sticky, clear film that contains bacteria, builds up on your teeth. The bacteria inflames and irritates your gums, causing a mild form of gum disease.

If you have gingivitis, you may notice:

  • Bleeding: You may see or taste blood or notice that your toothbrush and dental floss look pink or red after you use them.
  • Swollen Gums: Gingivitis may make your gums appear red and puffy.
  • Receding Gums: Bacteria can damage your gums, making them recede. If your teeth look longer than usual, your gums are receding.
  • Tooth Sensitivity: As your gums recede, they expose the sensitive roots of your teeth. As a result, your teeth might hurt if you eat or drink hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks.
  • Bad Breath: Are you embarrassed by your bad breath? Bad breath caused by plaque buildup is a common gingivitis symptom.

Who Gets Gingivitis?

You may be more likely to develop gingivitis if you don't brush or floss thoroughly or often enough. Like many people, you may not be brushing the full two minutes recommended by the American Dental Association or flossing every day.

People who smoke, use tobacco, don't eat a healthy diet, take medications that cause dry mouth, or have certain chronic diseases like diabetes or HIV are at an increased risk of gum disease.

What Can Be Done To Treat Gingivitis?

If you notice any signs or symptoms of gingivitis, it's important to see your dentist at the Saluda, SC, dental office as soon as possible. Improving your oral hygiene may be all you need to do to reverse your symptoms.

In some cases, scaling and root planing, commonly called "deep cleaning," may be needed. During a deep cleaning, your dentist removes bacteria, plaque, and tartar above and below the gum line and smooths your roots to prevent bacteria from growing. Your dentist may also recommend a mouth rinse that kills bacteria.

Don't let gingivitis harm your oral health! If you have any of the signs and symptoms of gingivitis or haven't had a dental cleaning for a while, call your dentist in Saluda, SC, Dr. Wheeler. You can reach Saluda Smilemakers by calling (864) 445-8124.
