What Are Dentures and Partials?

Sometimes, as we lose our teeth, we are allowed to explore our options to restore our smile. Missing teeth can mean a reluctance to grin, inability to bite and chew, hindered speech, and changes in appearance. Dentures are a great option to restore functionality in our mouth. Board-certified dentist Dr. Sam Wheeler serves the Saluda, SC, area for all of its dentistry needs.

What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic teeth that patients wear to emulate the appearance of a natural smile. They rinse the dentures before applying them in their mouth and use an adhesive in the underside of the denture to stick them to the gum.

What are partials?

Partials are dentures that fill in gaps that may still have natural teeth nearby. They usually use crowns, metals, and other materials to shape the partials and have them function effectively in the mouth.

Both dental tools help the patient overcome challenges with their oral health; these include swollen gum tissue, loss of natural teeth, and chronic or acute aches. Newer dentures tend to be less noticeable than older ones -- check with your dentist about the newest kinds of dentures available.

  • Take care to be gentle when handling your dentures.
  • If your dentures crack or break, contact your specialist as soon as possible.
  • Storing your dentures in water prevents them from changing shape.
  • Brush your teeth with a denture cleaner or mild soap.

Reasons to get dentures

  • Improve your chewing.
  • Patients with missing teeth have difficulty talking at times.
  • Face shape changes when natural teeth decay and fall out; dentures restore the natural form of the face.
